What a unique gem!! From the incredible staff and Michelin-star worthy chef, to the rooms and lush landscaping, to the amenities like sauna / cold plunge, hot tub and saltwater infinity pool, private rainforest trail to a secret beach... I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the Hilo area now.
Wonderful stay at Hamakua Hotel on the Big Island. We wanted to explore the other coast and stumbled across Hamakua. The hotel grounds are immaculate, views top notch, the hotel fully stocked, the rooms are super comfortable, and the chef, Joseph, makes incredible food for dinner.
My girlfriend Stephanie and I just returned from 5-days of adventuring on the Big Island, which culminated with a 3-night stay at the Hamakua Hotel. Wow - - We were both totally blown away by the hotel!
A superb experience. I would describe it as a White Lotus-like boutique hotel. In all the good ways. During the complimentary weekend happy hours/dinners, we met other guests and got to know the staff. Even some locals came and it was awesome to find out what it's like living on Kona.
Getting married at Hamakua Hotel
Two things make the tour worth the drive. First, see the ceremony spot at the exact time of day you'd say your vows — a west-facing beach glows at sunset but bakes at noon, and you'll want to feel the wind, watch where the sun sits, and walk the path your guests take across the sand. Second, bring your real questions: the weather backup (where does the ceremony move if it rains or the wind kicks up?), who pulls the beach permit, the sound-ordinance curfew, the catering and bar policy, and exactly what's included — chairs, setup, and teardown on sand are where quotes quietly diverge. Peak beach dates book 12–18 months out, so if the tour feels right, ask what's open in your season before you leave.
