Quick answers before you tour

Do we need a permit to get married on the beach?
It depends entirely on whose beach it is. At a private beach — a resort, beach club, or oceanfront estate — the venue owns the sand and handles everything; that's the simplest path. On a public beach you almost always need a permit from the city, county, or state parks department, and rules vary wildly: some beaches are $50 and a form, others cap your guest count, ban chairs and arches, or require a lifeguard on duty. 620 venues here offer a private beach — look for the "Private beach" badge — so the permit question never comes up. If you have your heart set on a public beach, start with our public-beach guide and confirm the current rules with the local office. Public beaches & permit rules →
What's the difference between beachfront, oceanfront, and waterfront?
It's the single most important thing to pin down, because listings blur it. Beachfront means you can walk onto the sand — toes-in-the-water ceremonies. Oceanfront means directly over the open ocean, often a bluff-top lawn or terrace with no sand access. Waterfront is a bay, harbor, sound, or intracoastal — calmer water, docks, marina arrivals, sunset over still water. We classify every venue by which one it actually is, verified by how close it sits to a real shoreline, so you can filter to exactly the setting you're picturing. Browse beachfront venues →
When is the best time of year for a beach wedding?
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spot in most of the country — warm water, softer light, and you dodge both summer crowds and hurricane season. In Florida and the Gulf, avoid August–October peak hurricane months and watch for sargassum seaweed in mid-summer. On the Pacific and in New England, June–September is the reliable window; the Great Lakes are gorgeous July–September. Whatever the month, ask the venue two questions: which way does the ceremony site face (west-facing means sunset behind you in photos), and what happens if it rains.
What if it rains — or the wind is howling?
This is the question that separates a great beach venue from a stressful one. Wind ruins hair, veils, and unmiked vows; rain needs somewhere to go. Ask every venue for its weather backup: an indoor ballroom, a covered pavilion, or a tented option. 189 venues here specifically mention an indoor or tented weather backup — look for it on the listing. A venue that shrugs off a forecast is worth a premium on the one day you can't move.
Can our guests actually get to the ceremony over the sand?
Worth thinking about early if you have elderly guests or anyone using a wheelchair — soft sand and heels don't mix, and neither do sand and wheels. Some venues lay a firm aisle mat (a "Mobi-Mat") or hold the ceremony on a deck or boardwalk just off the sand. Venues with beach-accessible aisles or ADA beach access are flagged on their listings. Also ask about parking and restrooms — the two things public-beach ceremonies most often lack.
What does a beach wedding venue cost?
It ranges enormously — from a few hundred dollars for a public-beach permit and a simple setup to five or six figures for an all-inclusive oceanfront resort weekend. Region, day of the week, and guest count drive it more than anything. We never invent prices: where a venue publishes package pricing on its own site, or couples mention what they paid in reviews, the listing shows it as "packages mentioned around $N — confirm with the venue." Always confirm; beach-venue pricing swings hard by season.
What about on-site lodging and all-inclusive packages?
For a beach wedding — often a destination for half your guests — on-site rooms are a gift: no shuttles, a built-in room block, and everyone together for the weekend. 1,843 venues here offer on-site lodging, and 548 bundle the venue, catering, and coordination into an all-inclusive package — one contract, far fewer vendor calls, ideal when you're planning from out of town. How are the venues ranked, and where does the data come from?
By what couples actually say: rating weighted by review count, so a 4.8 with 400 reviews outranks a lone 5.0. Details come from public listings, the venues' own websites, and couples' reviews — and we only feature reviews that are actually about the wedding, the ceremony, or the setting, never a resort's breakfast buffet. No venue pays for placement, and no venue can buy a badge.
